It wasn’t a disaster.

I dyed my hair. At home. It wasn’t a disaster.

I don’t dye my hair all that often (once a year used to be my “thing”), and when my sister-in-law’s were visiting we all wanted to go to the hair salon and get it done together. A hair cut for one, and the other two of us got our hair dyed. As you do in California, I looked up a well-rated hair salon on yelp and noticed a salon that had good reviews that was semi-close by. We drove to Campbell and sat down in the chairs. There were supposed to be 3 stylists doing out hair, but one guy never ended up showing up all together. That was unsettling.

sister-in-lawsI asked to go a bit darker with my hair, but to have no red in it at all. She showed me some hair swatches and we chatted through it. Once I walked out of the salon, I was pleased with it. I paid an exorbitant amount of money for an overall colour that faded out within 3 months.

I do all things correctly when taking care of dyed hair. Not washing it on the regular, and using colour treated shampoos (Aveda is my favourite). Well, fast forward a few months and I have this faded out reddish colour. I hated it. In the sunlight I had red hair. I have done red all throughout my teenage years and older. I’m sick of it, and now I’m all about embracing a natural brunette colour. No more reds!

I wasn’t about to go back to the salon, especially since the colourist used semi-permanent and not permanent (clearly). You ain’t eatin’ up no more of my money, fool!

Since my brunette roots were showing, I have been noticing an awful lot of greys coming in behind my ears, especially when my hair is in a pony (which is never, so maybe that’s why I hadn’t noticed them). Panic stricken and in a fit of fury I spent a while plucking them all out from behind my ear. I mean, who gets greys in their happiest time of their life? I thought you got greys when you’re stressed out! Well, the greys are starting to stress me out you guys.

I told The Guy to look and confirm I was in fact getting grey hairs, and mentioned to him I was plucking them out. He seemed to notice them and also panicked and told me to NEVER rip them out because apparently hair doesn’t grow back?

What does he know.

It might be true, so instead of continuing to pluck because god that took way too long, I started to do something about it. I feel way too young to have some grey hair man! At least it’s hide-able behind my ears and not on the top of my head. Some members of my family still aren’t grey. Guess I didn’t get those genes. I still hate them (the grey hairs lol).

As luck would have it, I received an Ulta coupon in the mail for a $10 off anything in the store. How convenient. I don’t want to waste my money on any more hair salons, since I never get what I want, why not just dye my hair at home and save me the frustration of throwing away my big dollars to someone who doesn’t listen to what I want anyway? Plus, the gals at Ulta were pretty helpful. Since I had my hair dyed in July (ugh it seems not even that long ago! I hope I don’t become a regular at hair-dying…) I wanted to know if I should do the roots, or the ends first. Luckily tey knew what they were talking about and walked me through the steps.

I even e-mailed my OLD hair dresser back in Waterloo Ontario to ask what colour I “should” dye my hair and what she used to do with it. Staying away from ashy colours is a thing I should listen to as apparently it’ll give my hair this greenish tinge. Could be okay for Christmas, with a red sweater, no?

All jokes aside. A 13.99 Clairol hair colour + $10 coupon = my kinda price range. right up my alley. A before picture.Weekend-OOTD

Here are the after photos! Clairol-Nice-and-Easy

hair-dyedNot bad for a first time hair dye at home in over ten years, right? I’m pretty pleased with how it came out. There is a smidge of red still in, which I dislike. But overall it’s pretty awesome, and I’m happy with the new colour!

Unwinding after a long day

We’ve been on the go all weekend and it’s been incredibly amazing having my husbands family here. Three off them ran the Sacramento marathon on Sunday and it felt extra special since it was my sister-in-law’s 30th birthday on Sunday, so she got to celebrate it by running with her Father and Brother.

While I enjoy keeping busy and spending oodles of time with my husband, our friends and family, there’s still nothing better than unwinding after a long day. I’m afraid I may be coming down with something. You know the sore feeling in your body throughout the day. So what better way to potentially cure what may be an oncoming sickness than a nice bath and treat myself to an at-home spa evening. Once that’s done with, put on my cozie’s and curl up with a tasty hot drink and catch up with the family. Does the trick!Relaxing-in-chair

Our house is finally decorated for Christmas, so you can see a bit of a sneak peek at how it looks with the little feather Christmas tree next to our new grey armchair from O.co. It’s a bit firm, but overall pretty comfortable to sit down and relax. As you know, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect grey (or green) arm chair. Ideally I wanted it to be a velvety fabric, but I was pleased with the Inspire Q, so I got it!Alfie-looking-up

Alfie-on-chairAlfie has taken possession of the chair, I don’t blame him. He’s either on the chair, or our new Moroccan Shag rug, it’s so cushiony and soft you guys. I’m no longer sitting on the couch on the other side of the room, I’m always sitting here with my feet up on a foot stool, wrapped up in this huge Christy Linens blanket watching YouTube videos, listening to music, or it’s where I go to chat on the phone with my parents.

grey-arm-chairI love that I now have a “me chair”.

I love to draw myself a bath and have a little soak to warm my body up. I bought the candles at H&M, but they’re unscented. Great if you’re not feeling up to smelling all those heavily scented candles. As for smelly candles my favourite candle is the World Market Bougie candle in the scent gardenia. I’ve been using Pure Brazilian shampoo ever since I dyed my hair — I love how silky and hydrated my hair has been feeling, I’ve been letting it air dry a lot lately, so it’s getting healthier and this is only helping. Thank goodness it doesn’t cause my hair to get frizzy.Candle-and-bath

I’ve been described as having a hotel-like bathroom. I love the way hotels present their towels for guests, and I try to mimic it at home for ourselves. It’s a little bit of luxe with handsoap not from the popular soap shops and just different stuff to decorate with.

Once my bath is over I’ll head back downstairs and make myself some hot chocolate or tea to sip on in my Santa Mug (from the Superstore/Loblaws in Canada last year). I mean, tis the season, right? How come no one has told me about Celestial’s peppermint tea? Is it limited edition? It’s amazing, and kind of reminds me of peppermint white mocha’s from Starbucks.peppermint-tea

Alfie trying to get up in my business, I don’t blame him. We both like to cuddle.Alfie-on-my-lap

What’s on my Christmas Wish-List?

Christmas-wishlist-headerFor the past number of years I didn’t have a Christmas wish-list. But now that money is tight, I haven’t been shopping as frequently as I usually would. I could say that’s a blessing in disguise, wouldn’t you? Having said that, I have been lusting after a number of things this year and this is what’s really on my Christmas wish list! Christmas-Wishlist-spiffy

  1. Lululemon Wunder Under Roll Down (cotton only!): I have been wearing my green Lululemon Wunder Under cotton roll down’s since I bought them as a birthday gift to myself back in May. I’d love another pair in either Black or Earth.
  2. Elizabeth Grant Moisturizing Stick: I keep this by my bedside and apply that or Dior Crème de Rose at night. I have a nubbin’ left of my Elizabeth Grant, which I received in a beauty subscription box a few years ago. It is so buttery smooth!
  3. Victoria’s Secret bras: I’m in need of some. I bought a few from their Pink line, and also from Target, but they don’t hold up as well as their regular line of bras. The one’s I purchased while at West Edmonton Mall in 2009/2010 still look brand new!
  4. Starbucks gift card: While I do like to explore and find hidden gems of coffee shops, I can’t help but enjoy a peppermint white mocha every now and then.
  5. King sized bed (img source): For the past 9 years, The Guy and I have been sleeping on a double sized bed. It’s time to upgrade! This will happen eventually, probably not until well after Christmas.
  6. Jo Malone perfume: Each time I pop into Nordstrom, I get a sample of Nectarine Blossom & Honey or Peony & Blush Suede. Both are beautiful on the skin and last the entire day. Unheard of!
  7. Nike sneakers: I have had my hot pink nike’s since 2010, and while they’re pretty fantastic, the soles are not the same as they used to be. I have a few other pairs of running shoes, but Nike’s will always be my favourite.

What is on your wish list?
