Life Lately

LifeLatelyI’ve been trying to keep busy, but it’s hard! There’s only so much you can do in the run of a day, a week, a month. I’ve been avoiding the sadness but a few weeks ago it hit me hard and I fully embraced it and it sucked big time. I don’t mean that for you guys to comment in a big ol’ pity party, I’m just saying. I’m fine, everything’s going to be fine. It just sucks, and it’s hard and I don’t like it. I’m so glad my husband is so compassionate.

latteBut I’ll tell ya what I do like. Espresso. And four shots of it. I’m starting to love the taste of espresso (still not loving the taste of a coffee though), and I’m trying to figure out the cheapest way to ask for an espresso drink somewhere, without paying $6 or $7 for it. Next time I might just ask for all the espressos with no additives (milk, or fancy frothy stuff) in it, then bring’er home and add some of my own milk. Am I being a penny pincher? My parents always told me I will always have a couple of bucks on me no matter how broke I get. Guess it’s from all those days asking for pure espresso shots. Really though, I don’t drink the espresso alldayerrday. It’s about once a week when I need to get shiz done. Ya know? Like yesterday when I blogged (I’m not even going to tell you how many posts I pumped out yesterday due to the caffeine intake). BUT IT WAS GREAT! By the way, anyone try the new Lancome Juicy Shakers yet? It’s the lip product up there shown in the tiny cocktail shaker shaped thing! Cute right??

Upclose-NicZoeI don’t dress up often since I don’t have a corporate job to go to any more. But I do like to dress up for blogging events from time-to-time. I put together this little ensemble over the weekend and liked how it came out! Fancy Nancy is sportin’ all black, with a bright red shoe. No matter where I go, these shoes get complimented on, and they were SO cheap!

Stand-with-purseOutfit of the day
NIC+ZOE day to night top and perfect leggings, Nexus 5X in my hand ;)
Moto 360 watch, hand-me-down purse
Etsy necklace, Brandy Melville gold ring, Charlotte Russe flats

NIC+ZOE is a really nice place to shop online for business casual clothing. They have some beautiful pieces and I already have a few more items on my wishlist I’d like to purchase from them (the top and leggings were sent to me).

What else. I’ve been enjoying running. Although, not for very long, but getting it done quickly. Sometimes Most times I hate running, but ya gotta get a bit more exercise than a bit of bouldering, and yoga-zen-time. So, running it is. You might’ve noticed I’ve been cycling an awful lot too. That’s because I have been. I got a new bike in December from Specialized, and after my first fall I’ve resorted to wearing street shoes and not clip-shoes (what are they called? Why are they called clipless, if you clip into them?). I’ve been exploring the city about an hour each time I go out on the bike and I still feel silly walking my bike across the intersections. But I’m still a bit wobbly and clumsy on it! I’ll get used to it one day. Back to running. I had a scary moment in a sketchy neighbourhood (which I’ll never run in again by the way). I had throat-burn from running so fast away from 2 scary guys who scared me for a legitimate reason.

Moto360-watchI got my first fancy smart watch! It’s the new Moto 360 Android watch in rose gold, and it officially launched yesterday. I’ve been playing with it ever since I got it. I feel like Inspector Gadget talking to my wrist to bring up the weather app, or to text someone. It also has a really interesting feature where you can change the strap on it very easily with the push of a button on the back. I have it in a tan pebbled leather, a black silicone, and the strap that came with it — this soft tan shade. I have to say, it brings me back to my childhood when a university student who lived next door neighbour bought me a watch with interchangeable straps for my 9th birthday. Memories!

colouring-bookColouring has been awesome too. Did you guys get any colouring books this Christmas? I swear it was a popular item. My husband gave me TWO colouring books, talk about spoiled! I’ve been using fancy calligraphy markers from fancy art stores in fancy San Francisco to colour and I’ve been enjoying every moment of it. About an hour a day I turn my electronics on airplane mode, put on some chill music, and colour, or just take a bit of me time. It’s been good.

How have you been?

Mothers Day Gift Guide (at Santana Row)

Last week I headed out to Santana Row for some Mother’s Day (May 8!) gift guide ideas, but also keeping in mind the two pantone colours of the year.

SrowI tried to keep the theme of baby blue’s and pink’s going, but it was difficult at a lot of stores. Plus I gotta have a bit of diversity in there for people who aren’t too fond of those colours (I personally love them and think they’re “my” colours, especially the pink.) So for the most part I stuck with photographing soft colours and neutrals.

Warby-ParkerWarby Parker: This glasses shop recently opened in Santana Row and what a fun layout — kinda looks like a library! While I don’t need glasses, many of the population do, including my own Momma. I had fun trying on glasses! I told the sales associate I don’t have a need for prescription glasses, and she told me you can buy them simply for fashion! Fancy glasses for an accessory! Right up my alley, for those that have 20/20 vision, ha! I’m not sure I’d agree with myself if I did have a need for them. They’re so fun though, you have to admit.

Vera-BradleyVera Bradley: Can you believe I’ve never been in this store, ever? The store isn’t entirely my style by any means but I thought I’d share some finds and wow their leather purses are so soft and came in a huge variety of colours and obviously different purse-types. Plus their makeup bags are lined, so you can wipe them clean.  (Shop: crossbody purse, makeup bag, pens).

AnthroAnthropologie: While I wouldn’t pair the first outfit together by any means (kinda looks soccer-mom-like eek!) I think the pink slouchy top would look so pretty with white jeans, and the blue crops would look great with nude sandals and a plain white v-neck. The perfume smells gorgeous, and the light blue/lilac tank is youthful and fun for summer. (Shop: pink blouse, blue crops, Happ & Stahns perfume, lilac tank).

SephoraSephora: Always one of my first stops at Santana Row. The staff is always so helpful at this location too. I’ve picked out a few favourites to show you guys here from my visit. I’ve only ever tried samples of the Caviar hair products but never purchased full-sized due to the price. But Mother’s Day is all about spoiling Mom, and I’m sure she’d appreciate the luxurious splurge. Not only does it make your hair feel soft, it smells incredible. The CC cream is my favourite from the Alterna line. Speaking of smelling incredible, look at these new perfumes by Derek Lam! So many new yummy smelling fragrances. A sweet addition to your Mother’s Day gift, heart shaped makeup sponges! Adorbs. (Shop: Caviar products, Derek Lam, heart sponges)

Urban-OutfittersUrban Outfitters: I recently picked up my first Gourmand fragrance (shown to the left) on my last trip to Urban Outfitters (Fleur Monoi hair + body mist is the one I bought!) but mine is a body and hair mist so it doesn’t last long, but that’s okay because I keep it right out in the bathroom on display and mist it on me any time I walk by. Mmm! I swear, Urban Outfitters is upping their skincare/body range of products. I come here to buy the Herbivore line of products (shown to the far right). And who doesn’t love taking a nice soak in the bath. Imagine how good you’ll smell after using something that smells of lemongrass, blue chamomile and vanilla bean. (Shop: Gourmand fragrances, sea of love, herbivore).

Kate-SpadeKate Spade: An ideal way to spoil Mom, if she’s into accessorizing with the cutest pieces. Kate Spade always has fun little trinkets or decorative watches to choose from. I personally love the mini hayden purse on the left. (Shop: mini hayden purse, heart plate, watches)

SugarfinaSugarfina: If there’s one thing my Mom and I have in common, it’s a sweet tooth! I love coming here for a lil’ sweet treat. Their decor is always decorated so sweetly, and each time I go in there’s always a new display. So fun! (Shop: Fruity loops)

LululemonLululemon: Is your Mom an athletic type who loves the Canadian brand Lululemon? They do no wrong in my books. Love their glass water bottles, and whenever I work out it’s almost always in my lululemon wunder under pants, and a lululemon racer back, or swiftly tank. Everything I’ve bought from there has lasted years. I don’t think I’ve thrown out/donated anything yet! (Shop: Water bottles, tanks, shorts)

Lou-GreyLou & Grey: Lou & Grey is another new favourite store of mine, because they always have Artians selling really neat pieces from cord keepers (shown in the middle) to super snazzy notebooks. Am I the only stationary fan around here, or can I get a high five all around here? Plus, their clothing…. every single piece I touch, is made of the softest fabric. I want my entire wardrobe to be from here. (Shop: notebooks, cord keeper, striped henley)

Pizza-AnticaPizza Antica: My pal Lauren treated to me to lunch, after we browsed Santana Row together earlier last week. So why not take your sweet Momma out for a bit of lunch after shopping. This is probably my favourite spot to eat in Santana Row, and maybe all of San Jose to be honest. Their wood fired pizzas are amazing. I always opt for the make-your-own with plenty of mushrooms and no onions. It makes me want to dance!

Outfit of the night: Great Gatsby

gatsby outfitA little while back I posted that photo above, on Instagram. It was unreal how interactive and popular the post was, so I thought I’d do an entire outfit post of the two of us actually dressed in the picture, rather than the clothing laid out on the bed. So if you couldn’t tell from the title of the post, my husband and I recently went to a Great Gatsby / Roaring Twenties Christmas party. It was SO fun to dress up in ‘costume’ and play the part.

Us standing

mrspiffykermsWe weren’t entirely sure how to pull off a 1920’s themed outfit. So I hunted the thrift stores with Mr. Spiffykerms and found the vest, jacket and hat for him there. That white shirt he’s wearing, is actually his wedding day shirt! :)

1920s dressAs for my outfit, I lucked out at Nordstrom Rack on cyber Monday. I picked up 3 dresses for under $150 total (I returned the other 2) trying to decide which one to wear. Ultimately I decided for the old school lace-looking one.

spiffykerms sitI wore my heels that I bought a few years ago, and as for my headband + feather, all I did was buy a sparkly headband from Michaels Craft store (also on sale!) and the feather was from there too. Rather than hot-glue-gunning it to the headband, I just pinned it in place with some bobby pins and was set.

The entire place was beautifully decorated too.1920s decor

And views of the San Francisco skyline at night? Unbeatable.SF skyline

roaring20sI love how it all turned out :)

We’re a pretty private couple and not big into PDA (public display of affection), but couldn’t help but post this holiday kiss and save the best photo for last. Teehee!!holiday-kisses
