Free Yoga during National Yoga Month

National-Yoga-MonthGuys, September is National Yoga Month. I’m not sure how I found out about it — perhaps on the radio driving to the climbing gym to do my yoga. How funny.

After a long relaxing break in Newfoundland, I got back into my regular fitness regime last week. I went to a couple of yoga classes, and holy quac — not going to yoga for over a month seriously limits my already poor flexibility. It felt really great getting back in and stretching my hips during yin yoga, a favourite class of mine to go to.

Yoga-selfieI had the studio all to myself for a couple of minutes.

Did you know that you can often get a one week free trial to a local yoga studio near you, during this National Yoga Month? It’s available both in the USA and Canada. Can’t leave my Canadian buddies out. I was interested to see if any local yoga studios within a 5 mile radius was in on this, and three studios were! So it’s a pretty good way to test out a few studios to find your best fit, without spending money trying to figure out where you want to practice.

Do you practice yoga?

What are your favourite poses?
If we’re being real, child’s pose and savasana are my favourite. But if I had to choose a third, I’d say the half swan pose except your leg isn’t on the ground, it’s the one where you look like you’re about to take off on a running race? What is that one called?

What style of yoga do you do?
Yin for me, I love holding the deep semi-painful stretches for lengthy periods of time

Do you have any pet peeves during yoga?
I’m not a fan of the loud breathers or the people who are loud in general coming into the room after yoga has started

Flatrock Fest, Newfoundland

HeaderDuring my visit home in Newfoundland, I’m bound to meet up with my friends who, conveniently enough, are all rock climbers like myself.

Lori, my climbing buddy (we were each other’s first climbing partners—19 years and going!) mentioned to me that she was heading down to Flatrock, a small town, minutes outside of St. John’s where she was going to be volunteering for the day and invited me. You know I had to go to that.

Flatrock Fest successfully finished up its third consecutive year of inviting regular climbers, folks who’ve never stepped foot on a climbing wall or rockface, and the others who have been itching to try outdoor climbing. For fifteen bucks you show up, get the gear supplied to you, sit in on sessions, and climb til your hearts content for a full day of climbing and rappelling, down at Flatrock.

Wallnuts Climbing Centre, amongst many more sponsors helped out in executing the event held by the Alpine Club of Canada. There were goodie bags handed out to the first 50 climbers who signed up. Inside the bags were a variety of prAna tee’s, chalk bags, Rock & Ice magazine, and a rock climbing DVD. I was not one of the lucky contenders to sign up in advance, plus I was volunteering so I didn’t think it was fair for me to grab one from a lucky attendee. I sure wanted one though! I did end up getting a sweet door prize (Evolve boulder brush) and a Black Diamond cam keychain.

It has rained continuously throughout my trip back home in Newfoundland, but we lucked out weather wise and had a fantastic day down on the rock with over 150 people in attendance. The guys from Wallnuts worked hard putting the event together, with more than 20 top ropes for people to get on and climb.

Leo (the owner of Wallnuts, who is like an older brother to me. My brother and him go “way back”) ended up staying overnight in a tent down at Flatrock the night before the fest, working hard putting everything together for a successful day. I was told he knew the tide wouldn’t be coming in throughout night, so he was safe and sound. Still wouldn’t be me down there, scary stuff!Tent-in-Flatrock

Lori set up the rappelling station — which I had a go at multiple times. It scared the crap out of me, since I don’t regularly climb outdoors, if anything I boulder.  But after a few tries I easily got over the fear of leaning bum back over a cliff and use an ATC to rappel down. That’s me getting ready to go! About-to-rappel

There was a special guest this year, Black Diamond sponsored climber J.P Ouellet was there giving a few talks throughout the day on trad climbing. I sat in on one of his two sessions (can you spot me?), and asked a handful of questions. Flatrock2014-BlackDiamond_GSL-6055(photo from ACCNL)

I felt a bit silly at first when he asked everyone in the group how long they’ve been climbing. Some answered 5 days, a few months and up to a few years. He pointed at me and I squirmed, answering “ninteen years” — and here I am sitting in on a beginners session on how to use cams, nuts, and bolts. J.P was pretty great, funny and informative with his talk at Flatrock, so I’m glad I sat down to enjoy it.

I’ll leave you with a few more photos that I took throughout the day at Flatrock Fest:

I’m glad I was home at the perfect time for the Flatrock Fest, and hopefully I’ll be back next summer for the fourth year.

4 tips for Working Out While Travelling

4Workout-Tips-While-TravelWorking out while travelling may seem like an annoying chore to some, or may simply be part of your every day routine. If you can’t bring your gym equipment with you while you travel, pack a gym outfit (which can be super comfortable to wear on an airplane!) and get going at your destination.

Here are some simple workout routines you can do without any weights, machines, or gadgets.

Jess-Nancy-runGo for a run

Explore the city! If you get lost easily, only make right hand turns, or vice versa. Bonus is if you find a local park and jump on a set of monkey bars. This will work on your core strength. If running isn’t your thing, find a set of stairs and do laps on them. Run up as fast as you can, then back down.

Chinups on a tree branch

This will make you feel like a kid again, and I’m all about feeling and acting young as often as possible. This is so fun, it won’t even feel like working out. Mind you, I can probably do 3 and I’m done for. But hey, I’m workin’ on it ;)

Pushups, situps, lunges, burpees and one-legged squats

I think they’re all pretty self-explanatory and they don’t require weights. These were all the workouts we did while I had a CrossFit membership, and boy did they kick my butt.

More into stretching and yoga?

Hang out with the lights dimmed in your hotel room, or find a quiet park, stretch and do a bit of yoga to ease and relax your mind.

Nancy-Jess-JumpMy friend Jessica and I have teamed up to have a giveaway for our readers. We have a $100 gift card from Soybu, which is a yoga and athletic wear company, and to go along with that a $25 iTunes gift card to put some new music on that iPod of yours, to help you get going!
