Holiday Gift Guide #1

Remember I said I’d give away a few items in my Holiday Gift Guide? Well, here is the start of it.

Every day this week I will be giving away something different on the blog! I am so excited to share this all with you. Keep checking back every day for different contests.

Up for grabs today is the mini KQC hair straightener from Flat Iron Experts. I’m sure you all are familiar with me blogging about Flat Iron Experts. They’ve been so generous to me over the past few years now, and it’s only best that I give back to my readers with a giveaway from them!

Flat Iron Experts now has a blog, and it’s not just about flat iron’s believe it or not. They’ve taken blogging seriously and have started talking about all sorts of things. One thing in particular that brought me back to reading them just once, when they shared the link with me (hey, I’m being honest!) — is that they’re so diverse. They talk about recipes, keep you up to date on new hair styles and products they have coming out.

They even suggested I do a giveaway on my site. So I’m trying to help them gain some quality readership by hosting a giveaway, and have everything focus on them rather than me and my site. It’s all about giving back. Happy Holidays, right? :)

I have to be honest. When I received the KQC mini hair straightener I wasn’t expecting it to be so miniature. It’s super cute, and easy to throw in a travel makeup bag, or even in your purse if you have some pretty unruly hair that you feel the need to bring a hair straightener around with you. haha!

This ceramic flat iron only has one heat setting (up to 410°F) and it actually has worldwide voltage. I don’t know how practical it would be on really thick unruly hair. Mine is pretty thin and fine, and doesn’t have much trouble getting straight with one pass-through. So I personally really like it. It’s the baby version of my other KQC hair straightener that I try not to use much since I’m taking a long break from heat-styling products on my hair, to grow it out. But sometimes I just really want to have sleek, straight hair that lasts all day. So I go at it.

Want one?  Enter away! Contest is only open to Canadians.

Top 5 benefits of being a nerd…

… for Halloween.

I dressed up as a nerd for my Halloween costume at work yesterday. As soon as I walked into the office, people stopped and stared. Bellies were grabbed in fits of laughter and eyes welled up as they bent over laughing at me. It was a natural costume, and perfect for me. I wore it proud, and I wore it well.

I decided to keep the nerdy theme going again this year. I’m pretty natural at it, since last year I was Mary Katherine Gallagher. The hilariously awkward character from Saturday Night Live.

I’m always up and out the door before my boyfriend wakes up, so I don’t think he knew I was dressing up for work. I e-mailed a photo to him and asked if he liked my costume. He said (and I quote) “hahaha, acting like a supernerd comes so naturally to you :P” Everyone at work said the same thing, especially when I pranced around with my asthma inhaler, socks pulled up high, and my pocket protector. All that was missing was my retainer in my mouth, but I forgot it last minute. I think that would’ve definitely added to the outfit.

When I got home I asked the Boyf to take some photos of me, for the blog here so I could show you my full costume.

L & I!

Few of my co-workers :)

I was never one to dress up for Halloween since I passed the trick–or–treating stage, but the last two years I’ve had some grand ol’ fun with it. Hope you did too! We didn’t get to pass out any candy, since kids don’t come knocking on apartment doors!

One last thing before I send you all off for the morning ;)Aren’t my nephews THE most adorable kids? K was dressed up like a “Rig Man” just like his Dad and R was a cowboy who kept dancing with those boots on! Cuties.

Top 5 benefits of me being a nerd for Halloween:

  1. I can wear all the clothes I already own, no blowin’ the budget here for my costume!
  2. I’m already quirky and unique, so there’s no “getting into character” for me.
  3. Tucked in clothes feels so awesome, and warm! I didn’t have cold drafts up my back/legs. Pulling up my socks over my pants, and tucking my shirt into my pants. Brings back childhood (nerdy) memories.
  4. Making people laugh (at me). Hey, it makes me feel good when I can get a laugh out of someone. I don’t take myself too seriously :)
  5. The joy of getting to show the world the real me. Priceless.

New hairdo

I got my hair cut and colored on yesterday evening after work. I honestly haven’t let anyone dye my hair after my mad experience back in February 2011. In fact my hair stylist and I broke up. Since then I’ve been going to this great master stylist who has been trimming my hair since, so I could grow it out to my ideal length.

The bad thing is, he charges  $70+ to do my hair, and all I’ve been getting out of it was a “dusting” cut. Literally cutting off the minimum to clean up my ends every 14 weeks. Dude I can’t afford that, nor do I wish to pay it if I was rich.  Last time I got it cut by master-stylist-dude was back in July when I showed you some before/after photos in that blog post.

My coworker L, always has great hair color even though her hair is a completely different color than mine (her’s is blonde). Speaking of which, I went blonde for about a day a few years ago. Big mistake.

L recommended her hair stylist who is very inexpensive but does great hair. I’ve seen the results, so I was confident going into my appointment. A few nights building up to me getting my hair done, I had a nightmare about this new stylist! Isn’t that insane? I dreamed that she cut my hair all off, and left one of those 80’s rats-tail by the side of my hair… and it was bright red. What a weird dream. Guess I honestly was really worried, haha!

I know people have said that hair grows back, you shouldn’t get attached. Blah de blah blah. But seriously? It’s my hair, I am attached and I get disappointed very easily.

I decided, in order to avoid disappointment, I was going to get very specific with this new hair girl. I arrived, and took off my rain coat, and brought in the printed out looks I’ve loved, and looked I’ve hated too, just so she would get a little hint of that I’m interested in. I mean, no ones a mind reader, right? I wanted my hair to have a slight change, nothing crazy since I hadn’t dyed my hair in 1.5 years so I forgot what it’d be like with a bit of color on me. This is the outcome:

Before and After photos. Sometimes it’s hard to believe how bad your hair really did look, until the after pics. I didn’t wash it the morning of, and just straightened it. Looks so dishevelled.

From the photos, and I suppose in “real life” you can’t exactly tell a huge difference. But the ends are now the same color as everywhere else, and I’m happy.

I’d definitely go back to her. Even if she does have her hair salon in a sketch basement.

How often do you get hair cut?
