Hello new bathroom

Master-Bathroom-revamp-headI gave you a tour of what our bathroom looked like in the past, when we get ready for our visitors, but I didn’t exactly show you what it looks like during the off-season when we don’t have guests. I love for the bedroom to be a complete sanctuary, and I would like the bathroom to somewhat replicate it, and look dreamy, and spa-like. Not too difficult to achieve, right? It’s hard to know what to do, when you don’t know where to shop. So today I’m showing you a few unique pieces I found for our bathroom recently.

Bathroom-tourConsidering we still rent, I don’t like to put too much on the walls (if any) so after a year our bathroom still has bare walls and I’m cool with that. I still think it pulls together fairly well, what do you think?

Bomb-shaped-tissue-holderAfter posting this picture on Instagram over the weekend, so many people were itching to know where the white dome-shaped tissue holder came from. It was a random eBay find for less than $7! You can buy it here. Please buy one for every family member. They come in a couple of different colours, and ugh — it’s kinda perfect. It arrived in 10 business days. I bought a few more things from eBay but you’ll have to wait until my next round of rated eBay purchases goes live.

Toothpaste-areaIf you’re wondering why there is only one toothbrush on the shelf, it’s because my husband and I are lucky enough to have two bathrooms! He uses the other one, and I get this one all to myself. The green thing to the right is a package of mints that I bought from REI of all places. Hello toothpaste is a new-to-me product that I’m currently trying out. I reached out to them and asked if I could try out their products and it arrived yesterday with 2 packages of toothpaste (one being peach mango mint, funny hey?), two breath sprays and a toothbrush. Then I have this white ceramic square tray I picked up from World Market for $1.99 and with a 20% discount too! I’m a bargain hunter at heart, I tell you. It was way cheaper than buying it for $13.99 at Muji, and I mean – it looked just like a plate to me. So I wasn’t about to pay that price (some of their stuff is over priced, but many of their products are reasonable).  Muji is a fantastic store by the way if you like organizing. It’s similar to ikea but nicer! Both the donut shaped item holding my clear toothbrush are from Muji, and finally a travel sized aesop hand cream that smells phenomenal.

Hello-Toothpaste-in-handAlright back to Hello products for a quick minute. I wanted to try them out since I knew they were naturally friendly and free of artificial colours. If I were to repurchase anything from this line, it would be the toothpaste.

Breath-spraySeriously, their packaging is adorable. This is the breath spray, and it’s just okay. You get the initial peppermint in the mouth, but if you’re looking for a strong zesty fresh feeling you’ll have to look elsewhere. I love SUPER minty but those can actually harm your teeth. These dental products are all natural and much safer for your oral hygiene.

Flowers-and-soapRanunculus flower, you are officially in my bad books. I loved the smell and look of these flowers at first, they looked like mini peonies. But these suckers wilted after three days and I had to trim them down to fit in this mini water glass because they were drooping over my vase. Sad times. On another note, does anyone keep their fancy looking hand soaps out and refill them with other cheaper soap? I bought this gardenia and white tea scented soap a while ago at TJ Maxx, but it’s been long gone, so I refill it with other liquid soap from the grocery store. Still looks fancy. Success.

Bathroom-tourWho knew a tissue holder could be so snazzy looking? So glad I found it. You can also use it for toilet paper too.

Bathroom-tour2Side note, it is so hard to photograph this bathroom without me being in it. This is one of the pictures I decided not to photoshop myself out of. :)

If you’re in San Francisco tomorrow, pop by Union Square from 11am — 4pm. Hello products will be there and you can have a chance to try their new products, peach mango mint, mojito mint, supermint and pink grapefruit mint. They’ll also be giving away friendly goodies and giving you a chance to win a $100 gift card to Target.

California Bronze . Beauty Talk Tuesday

California-Bronze-headerSpring has hit, and you’re telling yourself you need a little bit of sun to warm up your face after a long winter. Except you’re super pale, the weather is still cold and you have no idea what to do with your skin. Girrrrrrrrrl, fake it til you make it!

If there is one thing you need to buy this spring/summer for your makeup collection, it’s California Bronze by bareMinerals. it’s a brand new product that recently launched, and I’m here to tell you it’s the best matte bronzer I’ve used — even after only trying it out for an entire week (psst: it’s only because you need the tinest amount. Best bang for your buck here!).

bareMinerals-California-BroTwo universally flattering matte bronzers (The Ocean View & The High Dive) and one golden highlight called The Shining Moment.

CA-Bronze-BMI was flipping through my latest Ulta catalogue and noticed that bareMinerals came out with a bronzer duo + a highlight for summer, appropriately titled California Bronze. I e-mailed my contact from bareMinerals asking if I could review it. Because if anyone knows bronzer, it’s me. All I need in life is a foundation, concealer and bronzer, then I’m set for life. The other makeup items is simply a bonus. And just because I received the product for free to review doesn’t mean you shouldn’t trust my opinion. You should trust my opinion because I’m always 100% honest and tell you how it is. Seriously, go back and review my other beauty reviews. They’re not all honky dory! Not only that, I wanted to try this product out, so I made it happen by reaching out to the company instead of vice versa.

Just because I live in California doesn’t mean I am a sun worshipper! I am indoors most of the days, trying to retain this youthful look I’ve got goin’ on here in my thirties. Ya can’t take wrinkles and and leathery skin back. Can ya. Sunless tanner + bronzer = my bff. I’ll get into the sunless tanner routine a little later in April, but for now. I’m going to create a makeup look using it so you can see how it works on my pale skin.

CaBronzeLook11. Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair Cream: Apply an eye cream before your makeup.
2. Philosophy Full Of Promise: This is a firming neck cream, but I asked my philosophy friends if I could use this on my face, since it was feeling extra dry lately. Sure enough, you can! Apply a nice helping of moisturizer to the face before applying makeup. This will make sure your foundation doesn’t stick to any dry patches.
3. Dior Star foundation: One of my favourite go-to foundations lately. I use a damp beauty blender sponge to achieve a dewy look.
4. Laura Mercier concealer: I’m trying to use up many of my makeup items before purchasing new ones. Here is a Laura Mercier concealer I used under the eyes to brighten them up.

Before we get started on the next few steps, I thought the animated image would help you understand where I will place my bronzer in a “3” shaped motion on either side of the face.bareMinerals California Bronze

CaBronzeLook21. bareMinerals California Bronze trio: The bronzers are on either side of the trio, the middle is a powder highlight. Something I prefer to skip over because I usually like to use cream highliters to achieve a more dewy look to the cheek bones. I’ve used it a couple of times, but I definitely won’t use it up as quickly as I would the two broznzers. If you’re a little pale, use the one on the left titled The Ocean View, and if you’re already a bit darker use The High Dive (in which case I used the latter for the tutorial because colours always seem to wash out when I photograph this kinda stuff for you). Use a fairly light hand, these two bronzers are so pigmented you’ll only need a touch — which is excellent, as the product will last you that much longer. I’ve also used two of the bronzers together to create a multi-dimensional looking tan, just layering ever so carefully. I love it.
2. Jordana Lengtheinig Mascara: I picked this mascara up at Walgreens a few weeks ago, asking the lady at the counter which of the 3 Jordana mascaras was the most popular. Apparently it was this lengthening one. I bought the volumizing one before but it clumped so bad I had to throw it out after a month or so. This one isn’t too bad! I’d repurchase.
3 & 4 bareMinerals moxie lipstick in Express Yourself & Buxom lipgloss in White Russian: My go-to peachy pink lip colour lately. I’m already half way through the lip gloss. Good thing I know where to buy the full sized!

The finished look:

Do you use bronzer on a daily basis?
On the days I wear makeup, absolutely. Otherwise I feel like my skin looks to “flat”.

What is your favourite item in your makeup bag?
Concealer + bronzer.

Which season is your favourite?
I always say Fall, but living here in California I’m pretty cool with the warm sunshine happenin’ daily.

bareMinerals California Bronze is now available in stores, and retails for $29 USD / $35 CDN.

Disclosure: I received the bareMinerals products to review (but those were ages ago) and I already mentioned I asked for the bronzer to review! No one ever tells me what to write, so all opinions are always my own.

Minato Japanese Restaurant

Minato-Japanese-CuisineI’ve never been to a Japanese Restaurant, so I thought it was worth a try, given the fact San Jose’s Japantown is 1 of 3 remaining historical Japantown’s in the USA. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had a peek at the menu beforehand so I knew a little bit about what to order.

Minato-hoursAs someone who hasn’t tried sushi (I’m so not ready for it yet, even after trying Ahi Tuna Poke in December), of course I’d be the person to order the few chicken dishes on a Japanese menu. Aren’t Eastern Canadians supposed to love fish? Probably. But, I’m not an adventurous eater like some.

minato-miso-soupI ended up staying in my comfort zone and getting a tasting of chicken teriyaki and salad. First came out our miso soup, where I dug out the yummy tofu with chopsticks. Because, yolo. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to drink the miso soup, but I took it up with my hands and drank most of it before our lunch arrived.

Minato is on the smaller side of restaurants, and the menu is nice and short. I admire that, because whenever I go to larger chains I feel like I have to flick through so many pages to decide on what I want to eat.

Minato-lunchThe Guy and I ordered the same thing :) I wasn’t a huge fan of the salad, not much on it to be honest! The dressing was awesome, though I have no idea what they used.

Minato-mainThis is what you see when you walk in the first set of doors before you enter the restaurant.

MinatoTowards the middle of the restaurant when you walk in, there is an area for kids prizes after they’ve finished their meal. I’m not too sure how the kids get tickets, perhaps after so many visits they can save up and pick out a prize for themselves. This sort of thing reminds me of my childhood, where we used to pick out prizes at a fair, or at a school event. Super fun, and I’m glad Minato is doing it too. After our bellies were filled with lunch, we ended up checking into our hotel at The Fairmont San Jose. Now that is one beautiful hotel, I’ll have a review of our ginantor suite we stayed in (bigger than our old apartment), later on!

If you’re craving a bit of Japanese food when you visit San Jose, come check out Minato, it’s only a 1.5 mile walk from the downtown core in San Jose. Plus, it has a ton of rave reviews on Yelp, so many people have been enjoying it!
