Lake Tahoe Ironman

The second annual Lake Tahoe Ironman Triathlon drew thousands to our new home of NorCal. The Guy and I made our commute to Lake Tahoe at the crack of dawn Friday morning to get ready for his upcoming sixth Ironman only to receive heartbreaking news the morning of. IM-Tahoe-2014-T1If you don’t know much about Ironmans or triathlons in general, the Ironman is the longest triathlon race and they have many courses spread all around the world for athletes to compete in. The Ironman distance is 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run, with a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race.

Family-portraitNot my idea of a challenge, but my husband is all over it. I mean, this is as “family portrait” as we get.

Smoke-fire-at-IMTahoe-2014Race day was an incredibly sad and disappointing morning. Our athletes were standing in the water suited up in their wetsuit minutes before gun-time, when they cancelled Ironman Lake Tahoe due to unsafe air quality conditions. All the money, all the training — the mental and physical preparations gone all because of one arsonist.

Ironman Lake Tahoe isn’t having much luck with their races as last year’s left a lasting impression on the athletes and spectators with the air temp being a brisk 0° C / 33° F and one of the highest DNF’s in Ironman history. This being the second year was devastating to all participants involved. Early Sunday morning all the racers, spectators, volunteers and staff got ready for the big day. People flew in from all over the world, and luckily we had an easy 4 hour drive (we brought our dog Alfie along too, loving these dog friendly hotels that are around).

IM-Tahoe-Squaw-ValleyMy husband was so dejected, as was everyone else — we checked out of our hotel early and drove back home. Now we can’t help but wonder what is happening to the 50 qualifying Kona spots. My husband wanted to compete at Ironman Lake Tahoe and try to qualify for his dream: to race at Kona.

Ironman-Tahoe-2014WTC/Ironman doesn’t give out refunds and definitely won’t be rescheduling the race. Athletes should not have to take the blow of the cost in something that should have been cancelled long before the morning of.

FB Ironman Lake Tahoe pic by Alex SheehanMany people are ticked off due to the poor communication from the WTC/Ironman officials because everyone including myself felt like the event should have been cancelled before they were lead to the start or simply days before since. What’s even crazier is that they gave out finisher’s medals. A medal that should be earned.

Swimming-IMTahoe-2014My husband was so disappointed as he (like everyone else) received news when he had his wetsuit already on. He ended up doing one loop of the swim regardless.

A quote from an athlete’s loved one that posted on Ironman’s Facebook page that were going to compete at Ironman Lake Tahoe yesterday:

Maria Rocio Reyes The question is not whether it was the right decision to cancel the race. of course it was the right decision to cancel it. As a physician specializing in respiratory diseases, I feel the race would have placed too many people at risk of respiratory events. Having said that, the question is how could Iron Man as an organization have handled this better. At the athlete’s meeting, the organization was unwilling to discuss their contingency plan. Now, the reason is clear–BECAUSE THERE WASNT ONE! Of course it was not in the control that a freak decided to set a fire in the promity of the event, that the fire would grow exponentially so quickly, that the winds shifted overnight to ruin the air quality around the event site. No, those were circumstances beyond the organizers’ control. But, they were in control of their planning. They were in control of the way the decision was announced. They were in control of the timing of the announcement. They were in control of leaving the athletes hanging, still not knowing about refunds, etc. It is mind baffling to me that there was no contingency plan for such a highly anticipated event. As a family we put our life on hold for a year to allow my husband to train for this event. And what we got was an MC making a cryptic announcement a few mins before the race start. Sure they wanted to wait until the last min in hopes that the air would miraculously shift. But why not be honest and say this earlier in the week? at the athlete’s meeting? Where are the higher level organizers? The dignified thing to do would be for one of them to have the courage to stand at the start line in front of all those athletes and their family members and say this was a grueling decision and we are just as disappointed as you are. Dont treat us like we are some expendable thing that you can just toss out the window, bc let me tell you, that’s how we feel right now. The credibility that you have lost by the way you made this announcement and your lack of foresight on how to handle the inevitable has lost you many, many supporters.

Ironman races never cancel. Ironman Canada in Penticton had a similar situation a few years back, where there was too much smoke around certain areas of the course and they decided to change it up and do a ton of bike and run laps around the down town area, definitely mentally difficult but the show went on. I believe athletes should’ve had the option to compete in the event. Locals have been living in this situation for weeks and haven’t been evacuated, so let racers decide for themselves if they wanted to compete in it or not. On the other hand I completely understand why it was cancelled due to hazardous conditions, I’m not angry, I simply disagree with the way it was handled by WTC.

Walking-Bike-to-T1My heart goes out to the athletes who had sacrificed and trained an ungodly amount for their Ironman race. I am deeply sorry.

Most Easterly Point in North America

Whenever I fly home, I love sight-seeing and touring around like I’m a new visitor. My Mom is the ideal person to tour around with because she likes to drive off and explore new areas, unlike myself where I haven’t driven past certain points as I’m afraid of getting lost.Explore-Newfoundland

One of my favourite spots to go when I’m home is Cape Spear, or otherwise known as the most easterly point in North America. With incredible views of crashing waves, the sea salt swarming the air, and the crazy gusts of wind forever messing up your hair.

The two lighthouses were built in the 1800’s, and it’s a joy to go walking around the area especially checking out the old World War 2 bunkers.

For now, I’ll let the beauty of the photographs take over. Enjoy the view.

Bonding with sister-in-laws

We woke up the next day after my sister-in-law’s left and we both felt a little down. After two weeks of go-go-go, we were bummed that we didn’t have plans for the next day. So instead, we caught up on lost e-mails, internet news, and went back to our regular routine.

In the 9 years that The Guy and I have been together, I haven’t been around his two siblings and him at once. It sure was an interesting, and incredibly fun time while they were here. My Mom kept leaving me facebook comments on pictures, asking how much trouble us girls were getting into, and “poor ol’ Guy”.

cold-on-the-4thI suppose it describes us pretty well to a tee.

outlet-shoppingFor the first bit of Shauna’s solo visit (younger one, who was at our wedding) we were together for a few days as The Guy was working, and Krista hadn’t arrived yet. We ended up doing quite the amount of stuff together. I took her shopping to the Gilroy outlets, and helped her pick out some clothes and shoes as per her request. She didn’t do too bad, I must say. I scored some cute Italian ballet flats that are made of suede (my favourite kind of shoe) for $19 at J.Crew outlet — it was in the clearance section. The first pair I spotted and tried on, I didn’t think much of them until Shauna gasped and told me I needed them in my life. So of course I picked those up too, for about $40. Pretty amazing deal considering they retail for $130+ in their regular priced stores.

4th-shoesI passed on these beauties, even though I thought they would’ve been perfect for our first American Fourth of July.

Stanford-Faculty-ClubShauna and I were invited by an old colleague who still lives in Waterloo, Ontario (Canada) but was down in my neck of the woods for an event.

Standford Faculty ClubShe invited us both to the Canadian Ex-Pat Event at the Stanford Faculty Club! It was fantastic seeing a familiar face, as I always think of my old co-workers back in Ontario, missing them terribly. I still send them weekly e-mails about my previous week to keep them updated. They all seem to still enjoy it. So it was great seeing someone I knew all too well, and catch up on the last few months.

Mexican-foodOne night, Shauna and I had planned on eating at this new-to-me donut/sandwich shop, except when we got there it was closed. We decided to walk next door into a Mexican restaurant which was pure boredom when it came to food. It wasn’t very nice.

Santa-CruzOver the weekend, The Guy, his sister and I drove down to Santa Cruz for the day. Unfortunately we didn’t realize pets weren’t allowed in the amusement park area nor the beach, and we brought Alfie. So we only saw the outside area of it all. Did manage to spot some amazing surfers! I took an Instagram video of one of them.

I loved the bonding experience I had with Shauna, because I never really had that before. When I was home in Newfoundland last summer, I hung out with Krista quite a bit. But never with his younger sister. I taught her how to apply makeup, and we went around to a number of different stores to get some makeup and skin care samples for her, run home and try it all on. I also taught her a bit about self-tanner as we were applying it together (for her first time).

hair-doneOnce Krista arrived, we only had one girls-day together with all three of us. We all wanted to get our hair done, so I booked an appointment for the three of us. The salon experience was much left to be desired as we had booked the appointment as soon as the salon opened. Only for the owner to be the only person there, and running behind, as she worked on another clients hair. My stylist didn’t arrive until 25 minutes after the appointment, and the other one was a complete no-show. It put a bad taste in our mouths. Krista cut a bunch of inches off her hair, which looked great on her. I had my hair dyed all over with a semi-permanent hair dye a little darker than I had it originally, I like it. Shauna got hers dyed too – which she didn’t like – she was trying to achieve a more bolder, fun colour. Ah well, lesson learned. I won’t go back to that salon! Ha.

Livermore-OutletAfter our hair was done, we drove out to another outlet called Livermore Premium Outlets, where we scored some more deals. The nude heels were $21, and the black one’s were $10! I passed, they would’ve killed my feet, since they were poorly made.

The next few days, The Guy had time off work, so those days were spent going to the California’s Great America amusement park in Santa Clara. SO FUN. I forgot how much I enjoyed roller coasters, and drop towers – scares the crap out of me.

SF-July-4thWhile the sisters were here, we of course celebrated our first Fourth of July here in the USA. We drove to San Francisco mid-afternoon and spent the entire day there being tourists. What I didn’t expect, was it to be bitterly cold with that bone-chilling wind.

Cubby-hole-staying-warmA few of us were under dressed me being the worst because I was GOING to wear my red, white and blue (and 2/3 of that outfit was my blue+white shorts!). I was not going to back out of that and wear plain ol’ jeans. I’m being patriotic! Here’s Shauna and I warming up in a little hole in the wall by the street clothing vendor we later purchased hoodies from.

July-4-2014Needless to say, by sundown, Shauna and I had to buy some warmer clothes. Thankfully there were some street vendors selling hoodies and blankets for $10, which I snagged and kept me warmer than what I was, while we watched the fireworks.

Outside-GhirardelliBacking a little up in the day, while in San Francisco, one must get sundae’s from Ghirardelli Square.

GhirardelliSo that’s exactly what we did. Each time we entered their retail store, they handed us a chocolate. Fine by me!

Boudin-GarbOnce the sun set, we waited for the fireworks, and enjoyed our time together. Especially posing with Boudin’s breadbowl garbage pile up.

Fam-in-Santana-RowTheir trip seemed like it flew by quickly, and before we knew it, it was their last day with us. We kept their last day mainly low-key with a walk down to Santana Row, as Krista hadn’t seen the area yet. Sooo many photos were taken on their trip – mainly because we’re all camera-crazy, and half because they never get to hang out all together at once.

car-ride-to-BJsYou know you have visitors when your front hallway is filled with shoes. Love that picture. Our last meal was a decision made by The Guy and I — a place we’ve only been to, together once before. But knew we had to share it with Krista and Shauna. So off we went…

last-supper-at-BJs-Restaura We were back at BJ’s Restaurant (since The Guy and I enjoyed ourselves the week prior) for the girls last supper.

Shauna had an early morning flight to which we said our goodbyes before we all went to bed, and The Guy like the best brother he is — drove her to the airport. But, Krista’s flight was mid-afternoon, so the three of us grabbed some coffee then sipped and chatted before hanging out in the pool and hot tub a little bit before her flight. So sad to see them all go! It’s an empty nest now… until next time.so-long-sisterinlaw
