Gettin’ personal: Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations

Kiehls-Apothecary-PrepNot long ago I drove up to Kiehl’s Fillmore location in San Francisco for a 3pm appointment to receive my first one-on-one complimentary consultation which lasted about twenty minutes. I was one of the first to be introduced to the Apothecary Preparations, which is pretty snazzy. But, the service is available now for customers too.

I sat down with a Kiehl’s specialist to discuss which type of skin I think that I have. I sort of knew, but I wasn’t entirely sure how true it was. After some quick testing strips on my forehead and cheek area it was determined that I have a normal-oily t-zone along with dehydrated skin. The ‘normal’ percentage is 50% water in the skin. Me? I have 26%. Oops! Shortly after that consult I was introduced to Jeremy and have a chat about the newest Kiehl’s launch, the Apothecary Preparations.

Kiehls-SFAfter evaluating my skin type Jeremy introduced me to the Kiehl’s skin atlas where I took a look at each step to determine which skin care needs I wanted. I ranked my own skin by least of my worries to the most ‘problematic’ so to speak. Ranging from redness, pore size, clarity, hyper pigmentation, fine lines and vibrancy.

Kiehls-Apothecary-PrepartioBasically what Kiehl’s has created is a tailor-made custom formula specifically for my needs and wants in a skincare product. Brilliant, right? The skin-strengthening concentrate concentrate enriched with squalane and botanicals is the bigger bottle, and it comes with 2 personalized complexes with the most potent ingredients and needed to be mixed when I got home. I chose one for redness and one for wrinkles. The result? The perfect formula created just for me. Creating everything my skin needs, and nothing added that I don’t need.

I love how completely involved and personalized this concept is. I asked all sorts of questions and discussed my concerns with Jeremy, and he was so informative and helpful (and a pretty fun guy, too!).

Kiehls-on-Fillmore-SFThey sent me on their way with my own bottle of special serum to apply only at night (because it’s like a retinol product) and to use SPF daily (of course!). And you know I had to include some bloopers there for you. I was getting nervous posing for the photos!!

KiehlsThanks to Kiehl’s for the invite!

Apothecary Preparations are only available in store, but once you create your personalized formula it will be in the Kiehl’s system and you can access it again to re-order.

I went tailgating!

Toyota-Tailgate-HeaderLauren and I had tickets from Toyota to attend the Stanford -vs- Oregon Football Game yesterday (Stanford won 26-15, woohoo!) but to not only attend the Stanford game in style with awesome seats — we had fantastic parking and did a bit of pre-game tailgating, and VIP section partying before we walked over to Stanford Stadium for the big game. Toyota provided Lauren with a 4-runner for the event (and the week) so she came over to my house and picked me up then we headed off to the game.

Lauren-Nancy-TailgatingHow much laughing did we do at all that morning? It was so fun and it’s always awesome having a hilarious fun friend around. We had a few snacks, packed up a little picnic blanket and our hot drinks (it was pretty chilly in the shade) and had a bit of fun before we walked over to the VIP area.

LaurenHow cute is Lauren?!

TailgatersIt was my first time tailgating! I couldn’t get over the amount of people who were parked in these lots, and literally having huge cook-outs with their portable BBQs. It all smelled so delicious and I totally wanted to walk over there and chat everyone up and meet new friends. I mean, I could get used to this… tailgating was fun!

LeavingOur smiles indicated we didn’t have any fun at all ;) kidding.

VIP-ticketI wasn’t sure what to expect when we walked over to the VIP section. Huge tents were set up along with plenty of picnic tables and umbrellas for a bit of shade, and plenty of snacks, drinks and food galore.

vip-sectionYou don’t see me drinking too often, but I had a delicious margarita with some nachos and guac. It was fantastic. I didn’t photograph it because I completely forgot (aka having too much fun!).

marching-bandA marching band came through and did two songs for us, then they headed off on their merry way and performed at other spots around the campus before the game.

Go-StanfordEven if you know squat about football, ya gotta cheer for the home-team! Go Stanford!

Oregon-vs-Stanford

Holding-ticketYou’ll notice I didn’t bring my purse into the stadium area with me — and the rules are, that now everything has to be carted into a see-through bag with you (safety reasons I spose). So I have my phone/wallet and snacks in this ziplock baggie with me. Thanks for Lauren for providing an extra for me because I had no idea!

Stanford-Football-GameThanks to Toyota for providing Lauren and I with tickets and to experience a tailgate party! It was super fun, and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Watch the vlog I filmed!

Makeup of the day | Burberry Cashmere Foundation

Burberry Makeup of the dayNo filter, no editing done to the photo above. It was taken with my new Google Pixel phone which seems to make things a little more saturated and sharpened (something that bugs me a bit since I’d rather do that on my own if I wanted it to look a certain way). But that’s another story for another day. I wanted to share this photo of me above that I took on Friday of last week in my parked car — one, because my hair never looks that good. And secondly, I was sportin’ the Burberry Cashmere Foundation that I’ve been using more regularly now that the cooler weather has arrived.

I shied away from the Burberry Cashmere Soft Matte Foundation for a while when I got it — simply for the fact that it had matte in the name. But it doesn’t look too matte does it? It looks really natural and skin-like, it seems. Plus it gives a medium to high coverage to the face, which I’m diggin’. Overall it lasts a bit longer than the Burberry Fresh Glow foundation that I reviewed here.

When I went to get my skin analysis done at Kiehl’s, I heard the same results as I did back in 2012: I have dehydrated yet oily skin. All this time I thought it was bogus I had oily skin, but it’s not overly oily if you get my drift. It doesn’t require blotting so to speak — either that or I like that ‘natural dew’ I seem to have. My t-zone for the most part is the only oily bit on my face, which hey I’m okay with. When I heard the results it was when I was wearing makeup (both in 2012, and last week). So I’m wondering if my philosophy hope in a jar moisturizer has anything to do with it? Does that not sink into the skin as much, leaving an oilier residue on the face making me look dewy? Or do I have oily skin regardless of me wearing makeup? Thinking out loud here I guess.

Burberry-cashmere-foundatioHere’s what makeup I’ve been wearing (not too much difference in my everyday makeup besides swapping out a few pieces like the foundation, mascara and blush!). When it works – ya don’t change it. At least, for me. Even though makeup is super fun to play around with.
